For the past eight years, the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon have been grappling with severe socio-political crises, which have profoundly impacted the lives of countless families, particularly their children. These prolonged crises have led to frequent lockdowns,violent clashes, and widespread insecurity, severely disrupting daily life and education.
For many families in these regions, the fear of the unknown and the dangers posed by the ongoing conflict have made it difficult to prioritize education. As a result, many parents have opted to keep their children at home, fearing for their safety rather than sending them to school. In light of these challenges, and in a bid to restore hope and encourage the resumption of schooling, T4NA Cameroon, in partnership with the Live and Help Live Association, launched a Back-to-School campaign in September, 2024, in Balikumbat, a town located in the conflict-affected Northwest region of Cameroon.
This initiative aimed to encourage both children and their families to overcome their fears and return to the classroom as part of rebuilding the community’s education system. The event gathered over 50 children, ranging from primary to secondary school levels, who had been out of school due to the ongoing crisis. Children were warmly welcomed and motivated through speeches and activities that emphasized the importance of education, resilience, and community unity during times of hardship.
Led by Dr. Deyeb Charity Nuvah, a peace promoter and director of the Live and Help LiveAssociation, the campaign provided essential didactic materials, such as books, notebooks, pens,and other school supplies, to help alleviate some of the financial burdens on families struggling to support their children’s education. By offering these materials, the initiative not only helped motivate children to return to school but also reassured parents that their children’s education was being supported despite the difficult circumstances.
The campaign was met with immense gratitude and enthusiasm from the community, who viewed it as a beacon of hope in an otherwise challenging environment. For many families, it was a sign that, despite the ongoing conflict, the future of their children’s education was still possible. The event not only revitalized the children’s spirits but also served as a reminder to the community of the importance of education in the long-term healing and development of the Region.
By empowering children with the tools they need to continue their education, this initiative is helping to restore a sense of normalcy and optimism, laying the foundation for a brighter future for these young learners. The Back-to-School campaign in Balikumbat marks just one of many steps T4NA Cameroon and its partners are taking to support children in crisis-hit regions,encouraging them to return to school and pursue their dreams despite the challenges they face.
