Leadership: self-transformation is the key

-

It has been 3 years of journey for Together for a new Africa project, a journey which brought different participants from 7 countries ( Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan and RDC) together and challenged them personally and professionally.

Tony Gahamanyi from Uganda and an engineer by profession is part of Together for a new Africa. He shares how these past 3 years have been hugely beneficial to his life. He undoubtedly said that trainings have exposed him to a number of topics, skills and team activities that have shaped him as a whole in to a better leader and a better person too.

“I have learnt to put these skills more in to practice in my line of work too. Working in an industry that is always fast paced and always demanding results over a short period of time, I always find myself at loggerheads with the contractors I supervise. We’ve had a session before which talks about how a leader should exercise self control even when faced with issues that could easily anger him.

I’ve used this to great effect as it has enabled me to work closely with contractors and also to maintain a healthy relationship with them. I have also learnt to live by the ubuntu philosophy “I am because you are.” In the workplace setting, this means that to achieve more and grow more, you should look towards the growth and development of those you work with and supervise. In that way, we have been able to deliver a lot of projects within a short period through cooperation.”
