Inspired by the 2024 International Women’s Day theme, “Empower the Woman: Accelerate Progress,” T4NA-Cameroon led a transformative initiative in the Balikumbat sub-division, located in the conflict-affected Northwest region of Cameroon. The activity, spearheaded by Dr. Charity N. Nuvah, a T4NA-Cameroon trainee, peace promoter, and director of the LIVE AND HELP LIVE ASSOCIATION, aimed to empower rural women and promote peace within their communities.
The two-day event took place in March, 2024, beginning with human investment activities at the Balikumbat hospital and other health centers in the area. More than 50 rural women participated, offering their time and energy to support the local healthcare facilities. The resident doctor and health authorities expressed deep gratitude for the initiative, which they saw as a significant contribution to the community’s well-being. In response, the health personnel committed to launching a massive health sensitization campaign during the peace rally scheduled for the following day.
The next day, fifty-four women from the five villages that make up the Balikumbat sub-division gathered at the community headquarters for a day focused on peace, health, and economic empowerment. The program began with a prayer for peace, setting a hopeful and solemn tone for the day’s activities.
The first session, led by midwife Gilles Yukaa, centered on the theme “The Woman and Care of Her Reproductive Organ.” The talk was highly informative and beneficial, offering the women vital knowledge about their health. Following this, the women engaged in peace talks and received practical tips on economic advancement in conflict zones. These discussions were interactive, with participants asking questions and sharing their experiences, fostering a sense of solidarity and mutual support.
The event concluded with the distribution of farm tools to the 54 women, a gesture aimed at supporting their agricultural activities and, by extension, their economic independence. These materials were partially provided by the youth of the Balikumbat community, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the initiative.
T4NA-Cameroon firmly believes that empowering rural women equips them to better care for their families and communities. By engaging in farming activities, these women not only secure their livelihoods but also contribute to reducing the risk of conflicts by steering clear of activities that could generate tension. This initiative reflects the optimism that the young people in Balikumbat will follow the example of these women, fostering peace and development through responsible leadership.
In a region torn by conflict, the success of this initiative demonstrates the profound impact that empowered women can have in promoting peace and progress. T4NA-Cameroon remains committed to supporting such efforts, confident that they will lead to lasting positive change in the community.
