Women representation in power structures is very low and needs to be improved  across the world. Early this year the UN Women registered 27,3 %, the share of women in parliament in the Sub-Saharan region. Tezra Furaha Semuguruka, 25 years old, an alumni of Together for a New Africa (T4NA)  from Tanzania, is an entrepreneur and politician.

Her Journey in politics started  when she was at the University in 2017, driven by a deep-seated passion for public service and a commitment to making a positive impact in her community. Her interest in politics was sparked by witnessing the tangible difference effective leadership can make in people’s lives and by the desire to be a part of the solution to the challenges we face as a society.

“From a young age, I was involved in various community initiatives and advocacy groups, which gave me a firsthand understanding of the issues that matter to people and the power of collective action.” Says Ms Semuguruka. This grassroots involvement compelled her to engage in politics, where she could leverage her  skills and dedication to advocate for policies that promote social justice, equality, and sustainable development.

Tezra reveals that the decision to enter politics was motivated by a belief in the importance of having diverse voices in decision-making processes. She wanted to contribute to creating a more inclusive and representative political landscape, where the needs and perspectives of all citizens are considered and addressed.

Currently, she actively participates in national leadership politics as an elected Regional Youth Representative to the National Youth Executive Council of Tanzania’s ruling party (UVCCM). Tezra is convinced that her role in politics has kept her actively engaged, travelling to every village in Arusha region and other regions in Tanzania. An occasion to promote  inclusiveness and unity as a foundation for development amongst others.

Politics for the Unity Movement in Africa

“I decided to join the political Unity Movement in Africa because I deeply resonate with its mission to foster unity, development, and inclusive governance across the continent. By being a part of this movement, I am able to contribute to meaningful change and work towards the betterment of our communities on a larger scale.” said Tezra.

She was nominated as the regional Secretary of Politics for the Unity Movement in Africa in 2022. A journey she believed has  allowed her to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, gain valuable experience, and make meaningful contributions to communities.

“With all responsibilities, I have successfully spearheaded several key projects aimed at addressing social inequality, fostering economic empowerment to youths, and enhancing regional cooperation. These efforts have also strengthened my skills in leadership, strategic planning, and policy advocacy. “ She affirms.

She is grateful for the support and mentorship she has received along the way and remains committed to advancing our social welfare. She points out that the challenges and achievements she has encountered thus far have only deepened her passion for public service and reinforced her dedication to making a positive impact through political engagement.

The role of T4NA

Tanzania has one of the world’s young generations, over 70 percent are under 30. This is a challenge to the country but also a big opportunity for a better future. Young people are seeking opportunities however few decide to orient their careers in politics even fewer when it comes to females, but not Tezra.

Like any young (woman) politician Tezra Furaha Semuguruka struggled after joining politics, for the most part when she tried to translate her values into effective leadership. Her contact with T4NA came in 2018, while completing her  bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance at Institute of Accountancy in Tanzania, and enlightened her.

She joined Together for a New Africa first leadership training in Nairobi, the first week of 2019. An expert-led seminars and workshops focusing on co-leadership, good governance, unity and African Ubuntu wisdom. The experience lasted 3-4 years and brought together more than 100 young people from the East Africa Community.

“This was an engaging experience where we shared experiences and learned from each other, we were given opportunities to work on practical projects that addressed real issues in our communities. This helped me to articulate my values into coherent leadership principles and actions. Hence my struggles transformed into a clear vision”.Said Tezra

“Together for a New Africa instilled in me a sense of responsibility and purpose. This inspired me to pursue a formal career in politics to work towards a more united, equitable, and prosperous Africa. Its success in bringing together diverse voices and fostering inclusive dialogue demonstrated the impact that well-organised political movements can have on society.” She added.

Women representation in Politics

In March 2021, Tanzania made history by electing its first female President. For Tezra, having the first woman president was a momentous event that profoundly impacted her vision both as a politician and as a woman. As a politician, witnessing this historic milestone reinforced her belief in the importance of diverse representation in leadership roles.

In the country, mother of Swahili language, this shift in power was perceived as a true demonstration that the barriers women face in politics can be overcome and that leadership potential is not confined by gender. “As a woman, it has filled me with a sense of pride and optimism. Seeing a woman achieve the highest office in the land has validated the efforts of countless women who have fought for equality and recognition.” Tezra said.

It has shown that progress is possible and has inspired me personally to work even harder to support and mentor other young women in their journeys and ensure that future generations of women have the opportunities to lead and excel. It has strengthened my resolve to continue pushing for a more inclusive and equitable society.

Ms Semuguruka is aware of the challenges that exist in politics as a woman but she is ready to join her role models and other women in power structures to defeat them. “One of my biggest challenges is overcoming preconceived notions and stereotypes about my age and gender. Often, younger women are not immediately taken seriously or are underestimated in their capabilities and expertise.” She explains.

A behaviour that can force women  to have to work twice as hard to prove their competences and earn the respect that might more readily be given to an older or male counterpart. Despite the challenges, she is driven by a passion for public service and the belief that diverse perspectives are crucial for effective governance. These obstacles, while awful, in her point of view, also present opportunities for her to pioneer and inspire other young women to pursue careers in politics.

Tezra’s dream is to significantly influence the development of policies and initiatives that foster positive change, instil hope, and create a brighter future for all people. She envisions an Africa where social justice is upheld, economic disparities are reduced, and inclusive governance ensures that every citizen’s voice is heard and valued.

“My aspiration is to contribute to an  Africa where future generations experience peace, stability, and prosperity, supported by strong educational systems, vibrant economies, and transparent, accountable leadership.”
